Digital Engineering in Reliability & Maintainability Engineering 6.1.23

With Digital Engineering (DE) becoming a critical component of engineering practices, R&M engineers need to be ready to understand and integrate DE into their daily activities. Reliability and Maintainability (R&M) engineering activities should be properly integrated across all functional areas of a program to implement an effective R&M engineering program. Digital Engineering provides a common platform for this sharing of information and data across the lifecycle. DoDI 5000.88 calls for digital representations of the system as being an integral part of system design. In addition, DoDI 5000.91 includes supportability in the digital authoritative source of truth. To implement these policies, new techniques are in development for the R&M discipline which include current efforts to create a Model Based Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMECA) Data Item Description. The integration of DE into R&M practices also needs to be communicated to the workforce so that they are ready to support R&M in programs. The five R&M courses (ENG0850 through ENG0890) have been reviewed and are in the process of being updated to include the instantiation of digital engineering into R&M engineering activities. ENG0900 "R&M Engineering Interface with Product Support" planned for deployment by DAU by FY23Q4 includes three lessons focused on digital engineering and digital product support. Finally, this webinar will summarize the key tenets of DE and highlight applicability across the acquisition lifecycle.
